Somewhere around the 1970s, it became socially unacceptable to drink and drive. It took us that long to realize the risks and start fighting against it. New problems have arisen in that time though, including driving while sleep deprived. In fact, sleep deprivation creates many of the same effects that make driving drunk so dangerous. We discuss why you should not drive sleep deprived here.
Effects Of Sleep Deprivation:
Like alcohol, sleep deprivation lengthens reaction time and decreases your ability to focus. Both of these can bring about fatal repercussions on the road, even if a driver doesn’t fall completely asleep.
- According to a poll by the National Sleep Foundation (NSA), conducted in 2015, over 1/3 of the people questioned admitted to having fallen asleep behind the wheel once or more sometime in their lifetime.
- Researches in Australia indicated that driving after 24 hours without sleeping creates an equal crash risk to driving with a 0.1 BAC.
